How to Seal Granite When buying Granite Counter tops, many people ask themselves "How often will I need to seal this?" Well, there is no definite correct answer. On one side, people will tell you that granite should be sealed every year. They say that granite needs to be sealed on a schedule, and every year is perfect. They will also tell you that if you "live in your kitchen" and use a lot of cleaners, that you should seal your counter tops twice a year, just to be safe. Then there is the other side, the side that tells you not to set a schedule, or seal your granite just to be safe. They will tell you only to seal your granite if it does not pass the "test". The granite sealing test is very straightforward. You simply dampen a cloth with water or lemon juice, then you sit it on your counter tops with a plate or two on top of the cloth. The lemon juice will take less time to "show" than water because of the acidity. If your counter top shows a water spot within the first thirty minutes, it is time to seal your counter tops, according to some. Going by the test, you could need to seal your granite as low as every six months or as high as every six years, depending on the type of granite you have. I believe that the test may have its downsides. If you perform the test by your stove, the outcome may be different than it would be buy your sink due to how much you use each area. If the test proves that your granite needs to be sealed in one area, do you believe that it needs to be sealed in all areas? So, if you're planning on getting granite counter tops and you are looking for the correct answer of when to seal your granite, you aren't going to find it. It is your choice. I personally would just seal mine once per year, but also try the test just out of curiosity. You should also be advised that using heavily acid cleaners very often will break down your stone faster.
